3-D Secure

3-D Secure is an XML based protocol designed to be an additional security layer for online credit and debit card transactions.(Card Not Present or CNP ecommerce and online payments). It goes by different names depending on the card brand; Verified by Visa, MasterCard SecureCode, American Express SafeKey, J/Secure.
During checkout, a transaction using Verified-by-Visa or MasterCard SecureCode will initiate a redirection to the website of the card issuing bank to authorize the transaction. Each issuer could use any kind of authentication method including instant mobile text password (the protocol does not cover this). Currently available in limited regions.
